It has always been maintained that the Cod stock at the Grand Banks Newfoundland was fished down to a near extinction. However, when the EEZ, national fishery zone, was extended to 200 nautical miles in 1976, all the foreign trawler fleet disappeared from the grounds, except the Nose and Tail of the banks. The fishing pressure was vastly reduced and at the same time recruitment increased and the ocean conditions worsened. This factors together caused increased population density in reduced food supply causing starvation and increased mortality of the cod.
